It was a tough hike no doubt, but the views were amazing! We took 6.5 hrs including top time, breaks on the way up to enjoy the views and stop for pictures. This is a strenuous hike - Bring hiking poles if you have them and plenty of water (we took 64 oz between us and used it all), and food for the top, after the up taking in the views with lunch is a MUST! The hike is an out and back, peak is 3501' however my GPS showed 4500' of total gain and loss through the whole trip. Visitors should plan to just take their time, enjoy the views and don't over I concur on the suggestions to take plenty of water and snacks. This is a south-facing trail so it is one of the first to become snow-free, though it can continue to be muddy and messy. This hike kicked my butt and wore me out but it was definitely worth it! I do plan to hike this again on a future trip, but I'll try to do it with a group and take perhaps take bear spray. I did talk and sing to myself along the way to make noise and alert any bears of my approach. I hiked alone (and perhaps should not have done so). I hiked this trail on a weekday in early May 2018. To be honest, I only made it to the bench (which I think is below the first false summit) which was installed in memory of a young man mauled by a black bear in June 2017 after a trail race. The first 1/2 miles is not so bad after that it keeps steeper and rocky. Just about the entire trail is a workout. I've visited Anchorage multiple times and this was my first time hiking Bird Ridge.
